Chasing The Northern Lights: European Destinations For February Auroras

europe

February is my favorite time of year to visit Europe. Yes, the weather can be unpredictable at times, but there’s an abundance of top-notch events planned across the continent.

From the vibrant carnival of February to the heart-stopping romance of Valentine’s Day abroad, from the fresh powder on the ski slopes to the northern lights in the Arctic, it can be difficult to decide which destinations are the best to visit in Europe in February.

Best European Adventure, Snow, And Ski Destinations In February

The French Alps

Perhaps the most famous ski resort in the world, France is the undisputed champion of first-class skiing. With more than 150 ski resorts and more than 150 winter sports resorts in the region, the region has something for everyone, from the most exclusive and luxurious resorts with direct access to the best ski runs of Les 3 Vallés to the more affordable ski passes at Le Semnoz.

Nordland, Norway

Nordland is one of the least populated regions in Norway. It is perhaps most well-known for the popular film “Lofoten Islands”. Here, the snow-capped peaks and colorful Rorbu cottages add to the beauty of the landscape in February. However, there are plenty of other winter activities to enjoy in the north of Norway, including ski resorts near Narvik and arctic snowshoeing (some parts of Lapland fall within the territory of Nordland).

Firstly, the northern lights are expected to be especially spectacular this winter. The 12-year solar cycle will reach its peak at the start of 2024, so as long as the sky is clear at night, the northern lights should be a regular sight.

Second, Bodø, a small town in the far north of the country, has been named as one of the EU’s Capital of Culture 2024. This is the first time a city in the North has been named the Capital of Culture. The year-long cultural program kicks off on February 3, 2024.

Tyrol, Austria

Winter is at its best in the Austrian Alps, where snowboarding and skiing are two of the most popular activities in Austria. February is the perfect time to explore this majestic and picturesque region.

This corner of Austria is home to some of the best ski resorts in the world, with a wide variety of terrain to choose from, from the world-renowned Ischgl, Serfaus, and Ober Oberstdorf runs to the more laid-back Kitzbuehel runs. Cross-country skiing can also be done, and there are lots of opportunities for kids to go sledding.

The beauty of February lies not only in the fresh snow but also in the history and traditions of the Tyrol region. Like many other European regions in February, the carnival season brings color to the white landscape.

Where In Europe To Go For Valentine’s Day In February

Venice, Italy

Let’s begin with the most obvious option for a romantic urban getaway. Venice is undoubtedly one of the most romantic cities in the world — but I am talking about one of the most magical carnivals in the world, not about some iffy gondola ride.

The Venice Carnival dates back to the 12th century and is one of the biggest festivals in the world, full of color, glamour, drunkenness, and mystery — often hidden behind these legendary masks, also from the Middle Ages.

Sitges, Spain

From February 8 to February 14, 2024, the carnival takes place in Sitges, which is one of Europe’s most LGBTQ+-friendly cities, making it a great and safe place to celebrate Valentine’s Day. One of Catalonia’s oldest carnivals, the seaside town’s kaleidoscope of parades, masks, and crowds welcomes the end of winter hibernation.

There are two large-scale parades, the second taking place on February 13, 2024 — perfect for pre-Valentine’s Day celebrations — and the major LGBTQ+ nightclubs and bars throw parties all week.

Côte d’Azur, France

While Paris is probably the most sought-after French holiday destination for Valentine’s Day, if you’re looking to make your romantic getaway into a full-fledged week-long holiday, then a luxurious stay on the Riviera could be the perfect solution.

Known for its glamorous atmosphere, film festivals, pastel-colored houses, and being one of the smallest countries in Europe, Monaco is home to some of the world’s best restaurants and luxury resorts to escape to along the Mediterranean coast.

There are, however, a few of the best things to do in France in February in the south, and I highly suggest you plan your Côte d’Azur trip around one of them.

Winter Sun Destinations In February: Warm European Locations

Andalucia (or Tenerife), Spain

Andalucia, located in southern Spain, is one of the warmest winter regions in mainland Europe. February temperatures in Seville, Seville, Spain, average 17°C, or 62°F, during the day. Even so, you can expect occasional showers and chilly nights, but at night, you can enjoy the area’s amazing carnival atmosphere.

Madeira, Portugal

Madeira, located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, is one of the warmest places in Europe in February, thanks to its nearly year-round spring weather. The average daytime temperature is around 16°C/61°F, with occasional showers and cold nights. You’ll still need an umbrella and a jacket.

Whether your goal for February is to bask in the winter sunshine, take a dip in a lava-filled swimming pool, or take in the breathtaking mountain views over the clouds, you’ll find it all right here.

Cyprus

Cyprus is technically part of Western Asia, but it’s one of Europe’s warmest spots in February. With a temperate winter climate (average temperatures are around 15°C/59°F with a mixture of sunny and cloudy days in February), it’s a good bet for some winter sunshine, if not a full-on beach getaway.

On the other side of this island, you will find some of the most picturesque stretches of coastline, beaches, and bays. In addition to the island’s stunning white sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters (although slightly chilly at times), there are plenty of other attractions to keep you occupied in the event of a rain shower.

From the tombs of the 4th century BC Kings in Pahos to the museums of the border-crossing city Nicosia, Cyprus’ best attractions are diverse and captivating.
